Tea Reverses Damage from Alcohol
Ethanol (alcohol) intoxication is known to produce free radicals
in tissues affected, including the liver and brain. Researchers
speculate antioxidants may help neutralize the free radicals
produced by ethanol intoxication, limiting the damage to
tissues. To test this hypothesis, Polish researchers
provided rodents with enough alcohol to keep them intoxicated
for 28 days.  The animals were given black tea to determine if it could enhance the body’s
natural antioxidant capabilities to help protect the tissues from the free radicals produced by
excessive ethanol. The researchers found that administration of black tea alone resulted in
an increase in antioxidant defenses in the liver and blood, and, to a lesser degree, in the
brain. Black tea considerably prevented reductions in antioxidant defenses due to alcohol
intoxication. The researchers reported that black tea had a beneficial antioxidant effect on all
examined tissues, especially the liver.

Tea and Suppression of Diet-Induced Obesity
Japanese scientists examined the effects of tea catechins on diet-induced obesity in mice.
The mice were fed either a low-fat diet, high-fat diet or high-fat diet supplemented with 0.1-
0.5% tea catechins for 11 months. The scientists then measured body weight, fat tissue
mass and liver fat content. They found that supplementation with tea catechins resulted in a
significant reduction of body weight gain resulting from a high-fat diet, as well as reductions
in visceral and liver fat accumulation. Feeding tea catechins also increased fat metabolism
in the liver. These results suggest that long-term consumption of tea catechins could be
beneficial for the suppression of diet-induced obesity, which may also reduce the risk of
associated diseases, including diabetes and coronary heart disease.
